Unit 1: The Androgynous New Student

⬇ PDF
The Androgynous New Student
Tyler

Hey, you’re new around here, aren’t you?

NS

Yeah, it’s my first week at this school. Tyler is a bit attracted to the feminine beauty of the new student and becomes bold.

Tyler

Listen, there is a school dance this weekend and it would be a good place to meet new people. And seeing I don’t have a date, well, maybe you’d like to go with me?

NS

(chuckling) I’m sorry. I’m not gay. Tyler suddenly realizes that the new student is not a girl. He is utterly embarrassed.

Tyler

Uh! Sorry. Wow, talk about sticking your foot in your mouth. Boy is my face red. NS (laughing wildly): You thought I was a girl! I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. They both laugh at the humorous misunderstanding.

NS

By the way, my name is Pat. And yes I realize the irony. Tyler (trying desperately to not to laugh): You have to be kidding. Sorry, but that is too funny. Anyway, it is nice to meet you “Pat”. It is a strange start to a new friendship.

Oh my god, the summer is almost over.

Frank

Yeah, I know. I was just getting used to sitting on my butt doing absolutely nothing and now it’s time to head back to school.

David

How am I ever going to get up in the morning? I am so used to sleeping in.

Frank

Tell me about it! I’ve been sleeping till noon every day.

David

I guess there won’t be any more late nights playing video games and watching cartoons.

Frank

I’m sure there will be plenty of late nights doing homework, though.

David

You got that right. Argh!

Frank

At least we will get to see some of our friends.

David

I guess that’s true, but at what cost? We will be too busy to talk to them.

Frank

Maybe, we should just quit and get a job.

David

But we are only ten. Who would hire us?

Frank

I suppose you’re right. Maybe, when we’re older we can quit.

David

Sure, like 15. That is really old!

Frank

Yeah, those guys have it made.

Unit 4: A Valentine’s Vacation Gone Wrong

⬇ PDF
A Valentine’s Vacation Gone Wrong
Fred

Where are we going to have dinner tonight?

June

How about you pick the restaurant?

Fred

What about a Japanese restaurant?

June

We just had Japanese food last Saturday.

Fred

Let’s go to an all-you-can-eat place then.

June

You know I don’t like buffets.

Fred

I know! Korean.

June

I don’t feel like Korean today. Fred (growing frustrated): Italian?

June

We can have Italian any time. Fred (angrily): Then how about instant noodles at 7-11.

June

Why? What’s your problem?

Fred

You told me to choose a restaurant, but you are being fussy and shooting down all of my suggestions. Why don’t you just pick it yourself? June (pouting): Then let’s just go back to the hotel and go to bed. Fred (rolling his eyes): Here we go!

June

What is that supposed to mean?

Fred

Nothing. Nothing.

June

You are ruining my Valentine’s Day.

Fred

Me? That’s right. It’s always my fault.

June

If you would just pick a restaurant that I LIKED…

Fred

What am I, a mind reader or something? Why can’t you just tell me?

June

You don’t love me. Fred (sarcastically): Right. I don’t love you because I can’t read your mind.

June

If you loved me, you would know what I like.

Fred

I know one thing you like.

June

What’s that?

Fred

Arguing.

June

You are so childish. I hate you! June stomps back to the car as fast as she can. She slams the door. Fred hears the locks on the car door click. He shakes his head and mutters to himself…

Fred

It’s going to be a long night.

Something in the Woods
Sally

Did you hear that?

Tina

Yeah. What do you think it is?

Harriet

I don’t know. It sounded like a pig.

Sally

A pig? It sounded more like a ghost to me.

Tina

A pig! A ghost! You are both crazy. I think it is a wolf.

Harriet

We are in Taiwan. There aren’t any wolves here.

Sally

Should we go and check it out?

Tina

Ok, but Harriet has to go first.

Harriet

Why me?

Sally

Because you are the fastest.

Harriet

No, I’m not. I’m the slowest. That’s why you want me to go first.

Tina

What’s your point?

Harriet

Whatever is hiding in the bushes will catch me first and you both can get away safely while it eats me.

Sally

It’s like the old saying, “I don’t have to outrun the bear; I just have to outrun you.”

Harriet

Very funny. You’re a real comedian. Suddenly a little white ball of fur streaks across the campsite and disappears into the bushes on the other side. Sally and Tina scream and then run and hide in the tent. The little furry animal slowly hops back out of the bushes toward Harriet. She begins to laugh.

Harriet

Aww! It’s just a cute little bunny. It’s so sweet. The other girls come out from hiding to see.

Sally

That is what we were worried about. I feel stupid now.

Tina

Me, too. This little guy wouldn’t hurt a flea. Before the girls realize what is happening, the cute little bunny lunges at them and tears them to pieces. It was their first and last encounter with the rare were-rabbit.

Unit 6: The Wrong Bathroom

⬇ PDF
The Wrong Bathroom
Linda

Did you hear what Tom did this afternoon?

Francine

Yes, I heard that he went into the girls’ bathroom.

Betty

Really? Why did he do that? Was it on purpose?

Linda

I don’t think it was on purpose. He is just near-sighted.

Francine

Do you really believe that? It sounds like a poor excuse to me.

Betty

Maybe, he does look kind of creepy.

Francine

I agree with Betty. He is a creep.

Linda

You two are so judgmental. You don’t even know his side of the story. You haven’t even given the guy a chance to explain himself.

Betty

I guess you’re right. Maybe we should wait to hear the whole story before we jump to conclusions.

Linda

How would you like it if someone spread rumorsabout you?

Francine

I wouldn’t like it very much. Still, don’t you find it odd that, after going to the same school for 3 years, he would “accidentally” go into the girls’ washroom?

Betty

You do have a point. That is weird.

Linda

Maybe he just had to go really badly and didn’t think he could make it to the boys’ washroom. Think about it. What would you rather do: a) pee yourself or b) use the boys’ washroom?

Francine

Since you put it that way…

Betty

Look! Here he comes now. Linda waves him over.

Tom

Yes?

Linda

We were just wondering why you went into the girls’ bathroom. Can you tell us?

Tom

Sure I can tell you. You see… Hey! Look over there! The girls look behind them to see what Tom is pointing at. Meanwhile he makes a break for it 16 When the girls turn back around, they realize they’ve been tricked.

Linda

I’ve changed my mind. He’s a creep.

Francine

And I guess we’ll never know the truth.

Betty

I guess so.

Unit 7: Stressed About Tests

Stressed About Tests
Harry

So are you ready for the big test?

Henry

Not really. I don’t think I’m strong enough in Science. There is no way I can pass.

Harry

How about you, Jock?

Jock

I’m not ready for the math test. I find math so difficult even though I practice it every day.

Harry

Well…I’m worried about every subject. I don’t think I could even pass a urine test.

Henry

I’m so anxious about the whole thing that I haven’t been able to sleep for the past week.

Harry

Wow. That is bad. At least I can sleep. Have you been having any stress related problems, Jock?

Jock

Not anything too bad, but I have been biting my fingernails more than usual.

Henry

I’ll take biting my fingernails over not sleeping anytime. While they are talking outside, their favorite teacher, Mr. Lin, comes up to talk to them.

Mr. Lin

What’s up, boys?

Boys

We’re just talking about the tests and how worried we are.

Mr. Lin

Don’t worry too much about it. You can only do your best. Henry (frantically): What if I fail? What if I fail?!

Mr. Lin

If you fail, you can do a re-write in July. That wasn’t even an option when I was your age.

Jock

And if we fail the re-write?

Mr. Lin

You aren’t going to fail, so stop worrying about it. And even if you do, the sun will still come up in the morning.

Harry

No, I’m pretty sure my mother would make sure that it wouldn’t.

Henry

Just tell me one thing. How can I sleep at night until this is finally over?

Mr. Lin

Have a nice hot bath, a warm glass of milk and turn your mind off. There is no sense worrying about something you can’t control. Besides, it is very important to get sleep because your brain is like a muscle and it needs rest, too. Studying too much can be counterproductive, so find time to rest and you will increase your chance of passing. Taking a test when you are rested is far better than taking a test when you are all worried and stressed out.

Boys

Well… Our rides are here, so we have to go. Thanks for your advice.

Mr. Lin

Remember… Lots of rest and don’t over-study; especially the night before.

Boys

We won’t. Thanks again.

Mr. Bean

Excuse me. Is this Gate “C”?

Mr. Jones

Yes. Are you going to Japan, too?

Mr. Bean

Yes, I am.

Mr. Jones

Oh. Is it for business or pleasure?

Mr. Bean

Actually, I live there. How about you?

Mr. Jones

I have to catch a connecting flight there. I’m actually going to Vancouver.

Mr. Bean

How long is your layover going to be?

Mr. Jones

About 1. hours or so, but I have a few last-minute things to get at the duty-free shops anyway.

Mr. Bean

Were you here in Malaysia on business?

Mr. Jones

No, I’m just transferring here. I was in Australia visiting a cousin. And yourself?

Mr. Bean

I came here on vacation.

Mr. Jones

And how was it?

Mr. Bean

I had a really nice time: Good food, nice beaches, fantastic shopping. Malaysia has a little bit of everything to offer. But I did have trouble going through security.

Mr. Jones

I hate going through security and customs, too. What happened?

Mr. Bean

I guess I look suspicious or something. They took me aside and searched my carry-on bag. Then they took me into a little room and gave me a strip search.

Mr. Jones

Seriously? That sounds terrible. Are you alright?

Mr. Bean

Yeah, I’m fine, but it was absolutely humiliating.

Mr. Jones

Well, that does answer one question I was going to ask you?

Mr. Bean

What was that?

Mr. Jones

Where are your pants? Mr. Bean’s face turns beet red and he runs for the bathroom.

Unit 9: Thinking about Egypt

Thinking about Egypt
Jared

So, I was thinking about taking a trip this week?

Kent

Where are you thinking about going?

Jared

I haven’t made up my mind yet. Do you have any suggestions?

Kent

Well… It is winter, so you should go south where it will be warmer. How about Kenting?

Jared

Actually, I was thinking about something overseas;3 Maybe Egypt.

Kent

That’s kind of far for a spur-of-the-moment vacation.

Jared

I know, but I’ve always wanted to see the pyramids.

Kent

Me, too. They are so amazing and mysterious.

Jared

And I want to see a mummy, too.

Kent

Not me. Mummies scare me. I find them creepy.

Jared

What about the Sphinx?

Kent

I wouldn’t mind seeing that. It would be awesome to actually say that I’ve stood next to something so ancient.

Jared

I guess that I have made up my mind then. Egypt it is.

Kent

Great! Can I come along?

Jared

Sorry, but you would cramp my style.

Kent

What? Cramp YOUR style? That’s no way to talk to a friend.

Jared

But what if I met a nice girl and wanted to spend time with her? You would be like a third wheel.

Kent

You’re just going to Egypt to pick up girls, aren’t you?

Jared

I wouldn’t say JUST to pick up girls, although it is high on my list of priorities.

Kent

It’s pretty sad when you have to leave the country to find a girl that will date you.

Jared

You’re so not funny. Maybe I should take you along and have you mummified. That way when an archaeologist digs you up in a thousand years, someone might actually be interested in what you have to say.

Unit 10: Woman’s Work

⬇ PDF
Woman’s Work
Annie

What does your father do?

Jessica

He works in an office.

Annie

That is pretty general. Lots of people work in an office. Can you be more specific?

Jessica

He works in the accounting department at the Pretend Bicycle Company factory.

Annie

So he is an accountant?

Jessica

Not exactly. He takes phone calls, schedules meetings, and takes care of incoming mail.

Annie

Oh! He is a secretary.

Jessica

He prefers to be called an office assistant. He gets mad when people call him a secretary. He says only women are called secretaries.

Annie

I see.

Jessica

And what does your dad do?

Annie

Don’t laugh, but he is a nurse. Jessica (laughing): Sorry. It just sounds funny to call a man a nurse. Annie (frowning angrily): I told you not to laugh. At least my dad isn’t a secretary!

Jessica

Again, I’m sorry. It is funny, though, that both of our dads have “women’s” jobs.

Annie

I wonder if their friends tease them about it.

Jessica

Probably just behind their backs. The girls snicker at the thought of their dads being teased like school boys.
